Legend, renowned singer, record artist and actor, Prince Rogers Nelson, popularly known as just Prince transcended on April 21st at the age of 57. The Minneapolis native was known worldwide for his massive popular hits such as ��Purple Rain’, ��This Could Be Us’, ��Crazy’, ��Cream’ just to name a few. 1. He won an Oscar
In 1985, Prince received an Academy Award for best Original Score for his film ��Purple Rain’. In the 80’s Prince was very much obsessed with the end of the world. Purple Rain was his poetic interpretation of the apocalypse. He went on and created this rock musical and infused his music into it and the two merged oh so beautifully.. Purple Rain is as much of a legend as Prince is.
Besides the Oscar, Prince also received numerous significant awards for his works. He won 7 Grammys, and received 30 nominations, numerous Golden Globes, Brit Awards, World Soundtrack Awards and many more.
2. Prince hailed from a musical family
Prince’s father, John Lewis Nelson performed with a jazz group known as the ��Prince Rogers Trio’ as a pianist and was a songwriter as well. His mother, Mattie Della Shaw was a jazz singer. Prince’s half sister, Tyka Evene is also a musician, both siblings having developed an interest in music through their father.
3. Prince was his real name
Most people think that Prince was just his stage name while in fact, it was his real name. Prince’s father, John Lewis Nelson named him after his band, the ��Prince Rogers Trio’, because he wanted his son to achieve all that he had achieved in his lifetime. Another interesting fact, Prince’s childhood name was ��Skipper’.
4. Prince shut down one of his own album releases
Prince’s sixteenth album, the Black Album was set for release on December 7th 1987. The album came simply in a black sleeve with the no credits to the icon, no printed title or photograph, hence the name ��black album’. However, a week before its release the promo-only album was scrapped by Prince himself on the basis of spiritual affirmation. Prince referred to the album as dark and immortal. It was however, later released in November 1994.
5. He changed his stage name
In 1993, Prince changed his name to which he explained as a combination of the symbols for male (♂) and female (♀). In order to use the symbol in print media, his recording label at the time, Warner Bros. had to organize a mass mailing of floppy discs with the custom font. The symbol soon became known as ��The Love Symbol’ and Prince dubbed as ��The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.
In the course of his career, Prince used many pseudonyms, citing that ��he had gotten tired of seeing his own name’. Such included, Jamie Starr and the Starr Company, Joey Coco, Paisley Park, Alexander Nevermind and Christopher.
6. He was a Jehovah’s Witness Follower
Prince became a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001 after a long debate and much influence from fellow musician and friend, Larry Graham. He attended meetings at a local Kingdom Hall and occasionally knocked on people’s doors, just like any other follower, to share his faith with others.
7. Prince was a multi-instrumentalist
Along with his many talents, Prince had the ability to play several instruments added to his repertoire. On his debut album titled ��For You’, he is said to have played every single instrument; 27 in all. Right from the acoustic piano, to the bass guitar, to the water drums and clavinet… all 27!
8. He wrote massive hits for other singers as well
There are several tracks out there that can be accredited to Prince’s brilliant artistry. Some examples include: Sinead O’ Connor’s ��Nothing Compares to You’, ��How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore’ by Alicia Keys, and ��Maniac Monday’ by The Bangles. He also wrote songs for famous singers such as Madonna, Chaka Khan and Cyndi Lauper.
9. He was once sick as a child
Prince said severally that he had epilepsy as a child and that he would suffer from seizures. He furthermore stated that he got cured after an angel told him that ��he wasn’t sick anymore.’
10. He played basketball
Despite his short stature, (he was only 5’2”) Prince loved and enjoyed playing basketball. He played the sport while in high school and continued to play for leisure as an adult.
